Junior Competitions - Supplementary Player Guide

U16 and U18 competition

  1. The under 16 and under18 teams will consist of 2 players, playing a 2 v 2 format. There must be a designated captain on court who is the only player allowed to approach the referee.
  2. In the u16 and u18 competition, coaches must refrain from entering the playing area except directly behind the player’s bench. They are only permitted to coach during timeouts. They are not allowed to call for time outs or approach the referee on any other matter except where it appertains to the safety of players.
  3. It is not permissible to play the ball open handed with the fingers (tip)
  4. It is not permissible to play an overhead pass with the hands apart (volley) unless the action is ‘clean’. It is possible to play a hard driven spike with an open handed overhead pass (when the ball can be held momentarily overhand with the fingers). It is recommended that the hands be together to receive the serve and any pass over the net overhead.
  5. It is expected that the volley leave the hands cleanly with no sideways deviation or spin; either of these signs denotes a double touch, which is a fault. However on the beach the volley action can be slower than the indoor game.
  6. If the ball is passed over the net with a volley, it must travel in a line perpendicular to the shoulders; sideways volleys are not allowed. It is for the referee to decide whether the action of the wind caused the ball to deviate. (TIP: when you play the ball leave your hands up to show the referee where you released it!) If the volley is intended as a set the ball need not travel perpendicular, however it is for the referee to decide whether the volley was intended as a set.
  7. A touch by the block counts as a touch so you will only have two more touches before the ball has to pass over the net. Except if there are simultaneous contacts by the two opponents over the net and the ball remains in play, the team receiving the ball is entitled to another three hits. If such a ball goes “out,” it is the fault of the team on the opposite side.
  8. If simultaneous contacts by the two opponents over the net lead to a “held ball,” it is NOT considered a fault.
  9. It not permissible to touch any part of the net or the antennae (accidental touching by the hair is not a fault). Once the player has hit the ball, he/she may touch the posts, ropes or any other object outside the total length of the net provided that this action does not interfere with play.
  10. It is permissible to penetrate under the net onto the opponent’s court as long as you do not interfere with play.

U14 Competition

  1. The under 14 teams consist of a maximum of four players, playing a 3 v 3 format, so that each team has a substitute. There must be a designated captain on court who is the only player allowed to approach the referee.
  2. In the under 14 competition it is permissible for the coach to enter the playing space for the purpose of coaching throughout the duration of the match. They are permitted to ask for time-outs, and substitutions.
  3. Players must serve in rotational order but each player may attack and/or block during the whole match.
  4. Two player substitutions may be made per set: the substituted player may only resume the game if he replaces ‘his’ substituted player again.
  5. It is not permissible to play the ball open handed with the fingers (tip)
  8. It is expected that the volley leave the hands cleanly with no sideways deviation or spin; either of these signs denotes a double touch, which is a fault. However on the beach the volley action can be slower than the indoor game.
  9. The ball contact by the block will not be counted as the first hit of the defending team. So you will have three more touches allowed before the ball has to pass over the net. If there are simultaneous contacts by the two opponents over the net and the ball remains in play, the team receiving the ball is entitled to another three hits. If such a ball goes “out,” it is the fault of the team on the opposite side. If simultaneous contacts by the two opponents over the net lead to a “held ball,” it is NOT considered a fault.
  10. It not permissible to touch the touch any part of the net or the antennae (accidental touching by the hair is not a fault). Once the player has hit the ball, he/she may touch the posts, ropes or any other object outside the total length of the net provided that this action does not interfere with play.
  11. It is permissible to penetrate under the net onto the opponent’s court as long as you do not interfere with play.
