WESSEX CLUB HISTORY

The Club was formed in 1976 by Geoff Allen when he started coaching a junior girls team. A boys team soon followed and the junior sections have formed the basis of the Club every since. The Club entered Men's and Ladies teams in the National League and both, with Geoff as coach, worked their way up the divisions into their respective Division 1's.

The Men, coached by Simon Golding, had their best league finish in 2000/01 and won the National Cup in the same year. Unfortunately due to the loss of key players the Club had to withdraw the Men's team from Division 1 although the Men's 2nd team, coached by Garry Joyce, won promotion to Division 2 in 2005. Despite continually losing players when they go to University, the Ladies team has established itself as one of the top five teams in the country over the past years. As always both teams have very young squads at present.
 
Numerous players from the Club have played for the South West teams, England Cadets, England Juniors and the England and GB Senior teams. Players that have come through the junior system and moved on to play for the England are Anthony Roberts, Danny Weemes, Chris Eaton and Andy Cranstone, while Nicky Tinsley, Lucy Wicks, Nicky Osborne, Chantel Mortimer, Georgina Poulton, Zara Dampney, Helen Brown, Sarah Palmer and Vicky Palmer have gone on to play for England ladies and the GB squad.
