About Us
The club was formed in 1976 by Geoff Allen with a junior girls' team that he was coaching. A boys’ team soon followed and the junior sections have formed the basis of the Club ever since. The Club entered Men's and Ladies teams in the National League and both, with Geoff as coach, worked their way up the divisions into their respective top divisions.
We have won 2 English National Cup Senior title, over 40 National Junior Championships as well as numerous South West titles. Including a 'Grand Slam' of National Junior Championships in 2002/03, winning all of the National Junior Championships for U16 and U18 boys and girls. Many players from the Club have gone on to play for the South West teams, England Cadets, England Juniors and the England and Great Britain Senior teams, including three players competing in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
More recently, in 2011 Bournemouth University / Wessex teams finished first in the South West Men’s and Women’s Leagues without losing a match. The Club two Super League teams competing at the highest level in the country. In 2013 we had one of our best seasons with the Women finishing 3rd in the top league and reaching the National Cup semi-final, while the Men won promotion, finishing as Champions of Division 1 and the National Cup, with a 3-0 win against previously unbeaten Northumbria.
Today, the Club caters for indoor and beach volleyball, beginners to Internationals from age 8 upwards. Wessex are one of the top all round volleyball clubs and the most successful at junior level in England. We have won 1 English National Cup Senior title, 40+ National Junior Championships as well as numerous South West titles. In 2002 / 03 Wessex won all four of the National Junior Championships (u16 and u18). The junior part of the club provides opportunities for young people between the ages of 7 and 18 years to receive coaching and competition in events ranging from local mini volleyball tournaments to National Cup. All coaching is by qualified coaches who are trained and have been screened for their suitability for working with young people. For our adult members we provide opportunities for all levels to compete in the National Volleyball League, South West League and Local League.
