Wessex U15s win Regionals

Wessex Under 15 boys won the Regional Championship on Sunday and in doing so progressed to the Divisional round of the National Cup which will be held on the 25th March.

Wessex had to beat ABS from Devon to become South West Champions and they started confidently with some excellent serving from Joshua Honeybun, Luke Honeybun and Jack Midgely. With control of the pass Wessex were able to develop, and then maintain, a large lead. The set was won 25-10. ABS came out in the second to demonstrate their serving ability and this put Wessex under pressure. Wessex despite good efforts from Dan Lakeman, Kian Safaee and Harry Midgely were unable to find a way past the good ABS defence. At 19-12 down Rhys Lambert came up with seven serves and with Luke hitting intelligently Wessex drew level. It appeared the momentum had changed but three serve receive errors saw ABS to a 25-21 win. Into the decider. The Honeybun brothers took control to see a 15-9 victory.

Next up in the National Cup were Cherwell – a very tall and powerful team. Wessex started brightly and caused Cherwell problems in the first set. Harry Midgely shone in defence while Rhys and Jack got in a stuff block. Joshua continued to set well and picked up loose balls in defence. Luke led the attack with strong hitting and clever tipping but eventually the Cherwell power was too much and Wessex lost 25-19 25-12.

Wessex now had to beat South Bucks to get in the Southern Last 6’s. All the players were making good contributions and the Wessex skill and power were too much for the young South Bucks team. Jasper Morgan made his debut as libero as Wessex ran out winners 25-8 25-12.
