Wessex U15s on top after Regional Qualifier
The Wessex Under 15 boys played in the Regional round of the National Volleyball Cup on Sunday with a squad consisting of two more experienced players, some less experienced with the youngest being 11.
New Forest were the boys first opponents and a string of excellent serves from Lemmy O’Brien saw them struggling. Wessex kept the pressure on with some controlled hitting from Rowan Turner. When Forest started to get into the game setter Tom Nicholas and Tommaso Kemp found the gaps with some second touch volleys. First set 25-13.
The second set was much closer at the start with Forest getting within a point as the Wessex defenders were unfocused. Captain, 13 year old Luke Honeybun, started to power in some unreturnable serves which allowed Wessex to pull away into a healthy lead. Nicholas blocked well before setting up O’Brien and Honeybun for point winning smashes. With Turner, Honeybun and O’Brien receiving well the set was won 25-17.
The second match was against ABS, Devon who had a small and younger team. They fought bravely against the power of Honeybun’s serving but were unable to find a way past the Wessex defence. Joshu Honeybun was getting his first major piece of volleyball action and did well as the set was won 25-8. Much the same followed in the second set with Kian Safaee showing good awareness in the backcourt. It was Nicholas’ turn to have a serving run as Honeybun, O’Brien and Turner dominated the front court. It needed a couple of dive pick ups in one rally to win the point before Nicholas got a smashing opportunity. Dan Lakeman came on to make a good pass and smash. Wessex retained control until the final whistle at 25-9.
